Shift - Community investigation kitCreator, designer & illustrator / 2011
I was commissioned by the NPO Shift to create and design a ethnographic tool kit for children ages 11 - 13 from Sakumlandela primary, Khayelitsha. The aim of the kit was to gather information from the youths perspective. The kit was designed so that it folded up into an A5 booklet that could easily be carried around by the children. Tasks in the kit included; photo journalism, "a day in their life" journal page and a interactive map with stickers. A second design component was a A2 sized theater. That was used in a story telling workshop, where the children acted out stories from their every day life. These stories where then recorded and used in the understanding of the area and community. Design stormingTeam of 11 individuals / 2012
Creator, illustrator and video editor of the stop motion video I was fortunate to be involved in the first Design Storming event set up by the Cape Town Design Network. The Design Storming weekend aimed to get community members and designers to re-imagen and re-design the refuse collection system in the informal settlements of Khayelitsha. Our group developed the idea of a nod system, tracked by RFID tags that would feed info to a online trash tracking platform. The video explains the system and how it would work. The City of Cape Town has continued to work with a number of designers to test out the ideas developed at the weekend. Click to enlarge the images |

URBAN TRANSFORMERSCurriculum developer & Designer / 2010
Urban Transformers is a tool kit used in conjunction with a six month program run by Rethink Leadership, a NPO based in Cape Town, South Africa. The kit is designed to facilitate a participant's transformation in becoming a confident young leader and activist. It does so by taking a participant through a journey, where they identify challenges in their community and develop appropriate solutions so that they may design a personalised project around community development. The participants then work together helping one another to implement their individual projects and uplifting their communities. |

Awareness Hotline, Campaign 2009 We were asked to create a campaign for the NPO Activists Networking against the Exploitation of Children (Anex CDW) an organisation that focuses on child trafficking. We designed a range of fast food take-away bags and a posters that could be used in areas where children were illegally working. The aim on the campaign was to get Anex's help hotline out into the general public and hopefully reach those trapped by trafficking. |
